How do you cope with the triggers that come up in public spaces, like baby announcements or pregnancy-related events?

Many of us know that walking into a public space can feel like navigating a minefield, especially when we encounter baby announcements or pregnancy-related events. It’s a mix of joy for others and deep, personal pain for ourselves. Those moments can bring up a flood of emotions, and it’s completely okay to feel overwhelmed.
One thing that has helped me is preparing a mental toolkit of coping strategies. For instance, when I hear a baby announcement, I try to have a few grounding techniques ready. Deep breathing can be useful — taking a moment to breathe in for four counts, hold for four, and then exhale for four can help center us when emotions rise. It’s a small action, but it can provide a moment of clarity amidst the chaos.
Another approach that has made a difference is finding ways to connect with someone who understands what we’re going through. I’ve reached out to a friend who also experienced a loss, and we’ve agreed to text each other when we’re heading into places where triggers might pop up. Just knowing that I can share my feelings with someone who truly gets it has made those tough moments a little easier to bear.
It’s important to give ourselves permission to step away if things get too intense. If we’re at an event and the announcements start, sometimes it’s best to excuse ourselves for a moment. Whether it’s heading to the restroom or stepping outside for a breather, taking that time can help us process our feelings. We deserve that space to feel whatever comes up without pressure.
Lastly, embracing the community we have here can be incredibly healing. Sharing our experiences and coping strategies openly can help us all navigate public spaces together. Talking with others who have faced similar situations can remind us that we’re not alone in this journey, and sometimes just one real conversation can make the hard days feel a bit lighter.
Anyone else dealing with these triggers? What have you found that helps? Let’s share our stories and support each other through these moments.
