The unexpected triggers that can hit you at any moment — how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We all know that life can throw unexpected triggers our way, especially after experiencing a loss as profound as stillbirth. One moment, we might be feeling okay, and then something catches us off guard — a baby’s cry, a certain song, or even a passing comment can send us spiraling. It’s tough, and many of us have been there. One thing that has really helped many of us is creating a safe space for ourselves, somewhere we can retreat when the world feels overwhelming. This could be a cozy corner in your home, a favorite park, or even a warm blanket on the couch. When those unexpected feelings hit, having a designated spot to process and breathe can make a huge difference. Sometimes just being in a comforting space reminds us that it’s okay to feel what we’re feeling. Another approach that has been effective is keeping a journal. Writing down our thoughts and feelings can offer clarity and a release for the emotions we carry. We might jot down what triggered us, how we felt, and what we did to cope in that moment. This not only helps us understand our triggers better but also allows us to track our healing journey. Plus, when we look back, we can see how far we’ve come, even when it doesn’t feel like it. Connecting with others who understand the unique challenges of stillbirth can also be incredibly grounding. Many of us find solace in sharing our experiences with someone who truly gets it. I’ve found that having even one person to reach out to during those rough patches makes all the difference. Just knowing someone else has felt the same feelings can ease the weight of isolation and remind us we’re not alone. It’s important to acknowledge that these unexpected triggers are part of our journey, and it's okay to feel what we feel. Anyone else dealing with sudden triggers that catch you off guard? I’d love to hear what’s helped you cope. Sometimes just sharing our stories makes the path a little lighter.
