Family gatherings and holidays can feel like navigating a minefield after experiencing stillbirth. Many of us know that mix of excitement and dread that comes with these occasions. On one hand, we might want to celebrate with our loved ones, but on the other, the absence of our babies weighs heavily on our hearts.
One thing that really helped me was setting boundaries around conversations. I found it useful to have a few phrases ready for when someone inevitably asks about children or future plans. Something simple like, “We’re taking it one day at a time,” can help steer the conversation away from topics that may be too painful without shutting down dialogue completely. It can be a way to keep things light while protecting our emotional space.
Another approach some of us try is to bring a small token to honor our babies. Whether it’s a special ornament, a photo, or a piece of jewelry, having something tangible can help us feel connected to our little ones during the festivities. It also opens up the opportunity for a quiet conversation with someone who understands, if the moment feels right. I remember feeling a little less alone when I shared my story with a cousin who had no idea what I’d been through. Just having that one person who gets it made the day feel a bit more bearable.
You might also find it helpful to have a support buddy with you during gatherings. Whether it’s a close friend or a family member who knows your story, having someone by your side can make it easier to navigate tricky situations. If things get overwhelming, you can take a breather together, or they can help redirect conversations if they start heading into uncomfortable territory.
Navigating these gatherings is no easy feat, and it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions. Anyone else dealing with this during the holiday season? What have you found helpful in managing these conversations? Sharing our experiences can make a world of difference.
