Navigating conversations with friends who don't know about my stillbirth experience

Many of us know how isolating it can feel to go through the experience of stillbirth, especially when it comes to conversations with friends who may not understand what we're going through. It’s like carrying a weight that others can’t see, and sometimes we just wish they could grasp the depth of our loss.
One thing that helped me was finding a way to share my feelings in a gentle but honest way. When friends ask about my family or my pregnancy journey, I’ve learned that it’s okay to say, “I experienced a stillbirth, and it’s been really hard for me.” This opens the door for a deeper conversation without overwhelming them. It’s a way for me to acknowledge my experience while also gauging their willingness to listen.
Another approach that many of us find comforting is to prepare ourselves for different reactions. Some friends may feel awkward or unsure of what to say, and that’s okay. I’ve had friends stumble over their words or even change the subject quickly. Instead of feeling hurt, we can remind ourselves that they might just not know how to handle such heavy news. Sometimes, sharing resources or articles about stillbirth can help bridge that gap. It gives them a chance to learn and understand better without us having to explain everything in the moment.
Having someone in our lives who has walked a similar path can make all the difference. If you can, try to connect with others who’ve experienced stillbirth. I found someone nearby who understands my pain, and we started talking regularly. Just knowing that I’m not alone in this has been a huge source of comfort, especially on days when I feel like I can't reach out to others.
Navigating these conversations can be tough, but it's important to remember that our experiences matter, and we deserve to share them. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes everything feel a little more manageable. What’s helped you in these conversations?
