How do you cope with the comments from people who just don’t understand your loss?

Many of us have faced the hurtful comments from those who just don’t understand our loss. It can feel like a punch to the gut when someone says, “At least you can try again,” or “It was meant to be.” Those phrases often come from a place of ignorance, but that doesn’t make them any easier to hear.
One thing that has helped me is finding a safe space where I can express my feelings without judgment. Sharing my story with others who have experienced stillbirth has been incredibly healing. Whether it’s through a support group or even just connecting with someone online, knowing that we’re not alone in this journey helps to validate our pain. I remember when I first opened up to a fellow community member — just having that one conversation made me feel seen and understood, which is something I desperately needed.
Another approach that can be comforting is creating a list of responses for those well-meaning but misguided comments. It’s not about confronting anyone harshly, but rather preparing ourselves so that when those insensitive remarks come up, we can respond in a way that feels right for us. For example, saying something like, “I appreciate your concern, but it’s a little more complicated than that” can open up a dialogue or at least make them aware of their words.
It’s also okay to set boundaries. If someone continuously makes comments that hurt you, it’s perfectly acceptable to distance yourself or even let them know how their words affect you. We deserve to protect our hearts and mental well-being during such a vulnerable time.
And remember, it’s okay to have bad days. We might feel overwhelmed and upset by the lack of understanding from others. On those days, reaching out to someone who gets it can be the best remedy. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands makes everything feel a bit lighter.
