What do you say when someone asks if you have kids?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating conversations about having kids can feel really challenging for many of us in the stillbirth community. When someone casually asks, “Do you have kids?” it can stir up a mix of emotions. We might feel the weight of our loss and the desire to share our story, but also the instinct to shield ourselves from that awkwardness or pity. One thing that has helped me is preparing a simple, honest response that feels comfortable. For instance, saying something like, “I lost my baby, so it’s a complicated question for me” can open up the conversation in a way that feels authentic. It’s okay to be honest about our experiences. We’re not just talking about children; we’re talking about love, loss, and the journey that’s shaped us. Another approach is to redirect the conversation if it feels too heavy at the moment. A polite, “Not right now, but thank you for asking” can give us a moment to breathe without going into detail. Many of us have found that setting boundaries around these conversations helps us feel more in control of our emotional space. It's okay to protect ourselves when we need to. Finding others who understand this unique struggle has been invaluable for me. When I connected with someone who had been through a similar experience, it made the tough days feel a little lighter. We would talk about our kids and our feelings, and it felt like a safe space to be vulnerable. Even just sharing our stories with each other created a bond that reminded us we’re not alone in this. Anyone else navigating these conversations? I’d love to hear how you handle the question about kids, and what’s helped you feel supported in those moments. Your experiences matter, and sometimes just knowing someone else gets it can make all the difference.
