Navigating gendered spaces — how do you handle situations that feel uncomfortable?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating gendered spaces can be a real challenge for many of us who identify as non-binary. Whether it’s deciding which bathroom to use, facing assumptions about our gender, or feeling out of place in social situations, these moments can feel heavy and isolating. We’ve all been there, and it can be tough to find our footing in a world that often tries to box us in. One thing that has helped me is developing a personal strategy for uncomfortable situations. For example, when it comes to bathrooms, I’ve found that looking for gender-neutral options is a game-changer. However, if that’s not available, I sometimes take a deep breath and remind myself that my comfort is what matters most. It’s okay to prioritize our well-being in these moments, and sometimes that means choosing the space that feels safest for us. Another approach is to practice assertiveness when people misgender us. Many of us have experienced that awkward moment when someone assumes our gender based on appearance. It can feel really disheartening, but I’ve found that gently correcting them often helps. I might say something like, “Actually, I identify as non-binary,” and then move on. It’s not always easy, but standing our ground can create more understanding over time. Connecting with others who understand our experiences can also make a huge difference. I found someone nearby who identifies as non-binary too, and we started meeting up regularly to share our experiences. Just having one person in my life who truly gets it has made navigating these spaces feel a little less daunting. So, how do you all handle situations that feel uncomfortable? Anyone else navigating gendered spaces and finding unique strategies that help? Sharing our experiences can be so empowering!
