Navigating public restrooms can feel really daunting when you’re non-binary. Many of us have been in that awkward situation, standing outside a restroom, just trying to figure out which door to choose. It can stir up anxiety, especially when we’re trying to balance our identity with the societal expectations that often come with gendered spaces.
One thing that has helped some of us is scouting out gender-neutral restrooms before we head out. Many larger venues, like malls and museums, now offer these spaces, which can take away that pressure of choosing a “male” or “female” restroom. If you find a place that has a family restroom, that can also be a great option — it typically feels more private and less judgmental. We might feel more at ease using those facilities and can focus on what we need instead of worrying about how we’re perceived.
Another strategy is to go with a friend who understands what we’re navigating. Having someone with you can make a huge difference. You might find that just talking about your feelings before you go in can lighten the load. When I went out with a supportive friend, we would casually joke about the whole situation, which made it feel less serious and more manageable. Sometimes, just having that ally by your side can help you feel more courageous about using public restrooms.
We also know that not every restroom experience will be perfect. It’s okay to feel frustrated or anxious about it. Many of us have dealt with stares or questions from others, and that can be really exhausting. If it helps, consider carrying a small card or a note that simply states your identity. It can serve as a gentle reminder for yourself about who you are, and it can even help in situations where you feel pressured to explain yourself.
How do you all handle restroom situations when you're out? Anyone else feeling the same pressures? Sometimes just hearing how others navigate this can make it a little easier.
