Have you ever been in a situation where someone misgenders you, and it feels like a punch to the gut? Many of us know that sting all too well. Navigating pronouns can be a tricky journey, especially when we’re just trying to express our true selves. It’s frustrating, and sometimes it really takes a toll on our confidence and sense of belonging.
One thing that has helped me is being open about my pronouns right from the start. When introducing myself, I make it a point to include my pronouns. It’s a small way to set the tone and create a space for others to do the same. If you’re comfortable, you might even consider wearing a pin or a badge with your pronouns. It can spark conversations and help others remember to be mindful.
In those moments when someone misgenders us, it can feel overwhelming. One approach that works for many of us is to gently correct them. A simple, “Actually, I use they/them pronouns,” can go a long way. It’s not always easy — sometimes our voices shake, or we feel like we’re being put on the spot. But, having a supportive friend nearby can help ease the tension. I found someone in my circle who understands this struggle, and we often back each other up in conversations. Just having that one person who gets it makes a difference.
Another thing to keep in mind is that not everyone is going to get it right away — and that’s okay. We’re all on our own journeys, and sometimes people need a little grace. If you feel comfortable, you can choose to educate them. Share what your pronouns mean to you and why they matter. This can help foster understanding and acceptance, both for you and for others who might be navigating their own identities.
That said, it’s also important to prioritize your well-being. If someone repeatedly misgenders you despite corrections, it might be worth considering how much space you want to give that relationship. Your comfort matters, and surrounding ourselves with people who affirm our identity can be a game changer.
Anyone else dealing with this? How do you handle those tough moments? Sometimes just sharing a story or two can help us all feel a little less alone in this journey.
