Feeling validated in my non-binary identity during family gatherings — how do you navigate it?

Family gatherings can be a mixed bag for many of us, especially when it comes to navigating our non-binary identities. We often walk into these situations hoping for acceptance but sometimes brace ourselves for those awkward moments when someone misgenders us or insists on using binary pronouns. It can feel isolating and frustrating, but we’re not alone in this.
One thing that’s helped me is preparing a little “script” for those gatherings. It might feel a bit awkward at first, but having some go-to phrases ready can make it easier when someone slips up. For instance, if someone uses the wrong pronouns, I gently correct them, saying something like, “Actually, I use they/them pronouns.” It’s a small way to assert my identity without turning the moment into a big confrontation. Many of us have found that a calm approach can sometimes open up a conversation, and you might even find that family members are willing to learn.
Another strategy that’s worked for me is connecting with at least one supportive family member ahead of time. Maybe it’s a cousin or an aunt who gets it. Sharing my concerns with them before the gathering has made a world of difference. They often step in if they notice someone misgendering me or making dismissive comments, which can take a lot of pressure off. Having even one ally in the room can help us feel a bit more validated and less alone.
It’s also important to give ourselves permission to step away if things get overwhelming. If someone is being particularly stubborn or hurtful, taking a breather is okay. Finding a quiet space, even if just for a few minutes, can help us recharge and gather our thoughts. We deserve to feel safe in our identities, even during family functions.
Anyone else navigating this tricky terrain during family gatherings? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you feel more validated in those moments. Sometimes just talking to one person who understands can really change everything.
