How do you navigate balancing traditional Māori customs with modern life in Aotearoa?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating the balance between traditional Māori customs and the demands of modern life in Aotearoa can feel like a constant juggling act for many of us. We carry the weight of our ancestors’ traditions and values while trying to fit into a rapidly changing world. It can be overwhelming at times, but it’s also a beautiful journey of discovery and connection. One thing that has helped me is setting aside specific times for tikanga, whether it’s participating in a whānau gathering or simply practicing karakia at home. When life gets busy, it’s easy to let these practices slip, but carving out that time really helps me stay grounded. Many of us find that sharing these moments with our whānau or friends deepens our connection to our culture and each other. Just last week, I joined a small group of friends for a hui where we shared stories and traditions. It reminded me that even in modern life, these connections can keep our culture alive. Another approach I’ve adopted is being intentional about how I introduce Māori customs into my daily routine. For example, I try to bring a bit of te reo Māori into my everyday conversations, whether I’m at work or just chatting with friends. It’s a small but impactful way to honor my heritage while engaging with the modern world. Many of us find that even these small gestures can spark meaningful conversations with others who might be curious or wanting to learn. The challenge of balancing these aspects can lead to feelings of isolation. Sometimes, it feels like we’re straddling two worlds that don’t always understand each other. That’s why finding a community, even online, where we can share our experiences is so important. I’ve connected with others who feel the same way, and just knowing I’m not alone in this journey makes a world of difference. Anyone else navigating this balance? I’d love to hear what practices help you stay connected to your roots while engaging with the modern world. Let’s share our stories and support each other in this beautiful journey.
