Feeling disconnected from my roots in a predominantly Pākehā environment

Feeling disconnected from our roots can be tough, especially when we find ourselves in predominantly Pākehā environments. Many of us know that sense of isolation, where our identity feels overshadowed by the dominant culture around us. It can be a challenge to navigate spaces that don’t always honor or recognize our Māori heritage, leaving us longing for connection and understanding.
One thing that has helped me is seeking out spaces where our culture is celebrated, even if they’re small. Whether it’s finding a local kapa haka group or attending a Māori community event, immersing ourselves in our traditions can rekindle that sense of belonging. I remember feeling lost in my surroundings until I discovered a small gathering of whānau who shared similar feelings. Just being in a room with people who understood my struggles made a world of difference.
Another approach some of us try is sharing our stories. It’s incredible how talking about our experiences can create bonds with others who feel the same way. I started sharing my journey on social media, and I found others who were also navigating the complexities of being Māori in a Pākehā world. Those connections have become a source of strength, reminding me that I’m not alone in this.
One of the most challenging aspects can be the cultural disconnect we often feel. We might miss out on the language, traditions, or food that tie us to our roots. I’ve found that cooking traditional meals or learning te reo Māori online can be a way to reconnect with our culture. It’s small, but these moments of cultural practice can really help bridge that gap and bring a sense of home wherever we are.
Anyone else dealing with this? It can be hard to find our place, but sometimes just one conversation with someone who understands can change everything. I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you feel more connected to your roots.
