Navigating the expectations of our cultural identity while trying to fit in at work or school can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know that weight—balancing our Māori heritage with the pressures of mainstream environments. It’s not just about showing up as ourselves; it’s about being seen and heard in spaces that often feel disconnected from our roots.
One thing that has helped me is finding ways to incorporate my cultural identity into everyday interactions. For example, I started sharing aspects of my heritage during conversations or presentations. Whether it’s a Māori proverb that resonates with me or a story from my upbringing, weaving these elements into my work or school life has not only made me feel more authentic, but it has also sparked interest and connection with others. When we share our stories, we invite understanding and, sometimes, even curiosity from those around us.
Another approach many of us try is establishing small rituals that honor our culture throughout the day. This could be as simple as wearing a piece of taonga or planning a lunch that reflects our traditional foods. These little acts can serve as reminders of who we are, even when we’re in environments where it might feel like we have to suppress that part of ourselves. One of my colleagues noticed my necklace and expressed interest in its meaning, leading to a deeper conversation about our cultures. It’s in these moments of connection that we find support and recognition.
The pressure to conform can feel heavy, and many of us experience moments of isolation when we sense that our identity is misunderstood or overlooked. It’s easy to feel like we’re straddling two worlds, but reaching out to others who share our experiences can lighten that load. I found someone in a similar situation at school, and we started a small group to discuss our challenges and celebrate our successes. Just having that one person who truly understands the struggle has made a world of difference.
Anyone else navigating the complexities of cultural identity at work or school? I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you find balance!
