Navigating cultural expectations while pursuing a career outside of the community

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of standing at a crossroads, caught between our cultural roots and the ambitions we hold for ourselves. Pursuing a career outside of our Māori community can feel like a balancing act, where we often worry about what our families and elders might think, while also grappling with our own aspirations. One thing that helped me navigate these waters was having open conversations with my whānau about my goals. It wasn’t always easy, and I faced some tough questions, but sharing my passion for my chosen career made a huge difference. I started by explaining how my experiences could benefit our community, which helped bridge that gap. It’s about showing that pursuing a career outside our traditional paths doesn't mean we have to abandon our identity; instead, it can enrich it. Another approach I found beneficial was connecting with others who have walked a similar path. I reached out to a few Māori professionals who were already in fields I was interested in. Hearing their stories made me feel less isolated and gave me practical insights on how to manage cultural expectations while still chasing my dreams. We even set up a regular catch-up to share challenges and successes, which has been incredibly uplifting. It’s also important to remember that not everyone in our community will understand our choices, and that’s okay. Many of us face resistance or misunderstandings, but that doesn’t diminish our worth or potential. Finding support from those who get it can make a world of difference. Sometimes, just having one person who understands what we're going through can lighten the load. Anyone else trying to carve out their own path while honoring their Māori identity? I’d love to hear your stories and what’s helped you navigate this journey.
