Navigating the balance between modern life and traditional Māori values can feel like walking a tightrope at times, can't it? Many of us experience that tug-of-war between the fast-paced demands of today and the deep-rooted customs that shape our identity. It’s not always easy, but finding that balance is so important for our well-being.
One thing that really helps me is grounding my day in tikanga, or customs. For instance, I try to start my mornings with a karakia to set my intentions. It’s a small action, but it connects me back to my roots and reminds me of the values I want to uphold throughout the day. If the day gets hectic, I sometimes pause and take a breath, reflecting on what my ancestors would have valued in that moment. This practice can help us stay centered when the world feels overwhelming.
Another approach is making space for whānau in our busy lives. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush of modern life, especially with work commitments and social media distractions. But carving out time to connect with family can be a game-changer. Whether it’s a casual phone call, sharing a meal, or even just a text exchange, those moments remind us of who we are and where we come from. I found that having even one regular catch-up with a cousin who shares my struggles has made it easier to navigate both worlds.
And let's not forget about celebrating our culture. Many of us might feel pressure to fit into a more Western lifestyle, but embracing our traditions can be incredibly empowering. Attending local hui or participating in cultural events can reinvigorate that sense of belonging and pride. It’s in these spaces that we can connect with others who understand our journey and the unique challenges we face.
Sometimes, it can feel isolating trying to find that balance. I’d love to hear how others navigate this too. Anyone else juggling modern life with traditional Māori values? What have you found that helps? Your experiences might spark ideas for someone else in our community!
