Navigating cultural identity when my family doesn't share my background

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural identity can be a real rollercoaster, especially when our families don’t share the same background. Many of us know the feeling of being in a space where you don't quite fit in, caught between your heritage and the culture you were raised in. It can be isolating and overwhelming, but sharing our experiences can make a huge difference. One thing that has helped me is finding spaces where people understand the unique challenges of being an international adoptee. Connecting with others who are also trying to navigate their cultural identity has been such a relief. We can share stories about our experiences, from the awkward family gatherings where our cultural differences are highlighted to the moments of joy when we embrace our heritage in small ways. Just having someone who gets it can lighten the load. Another approach some of us take is exploring our cultural roots through food, music, or art. Cooking traditional dishes or listening to music from our birth countries has helped me feel more connected to my identity. It’s a way to celebrate who we are and share that with others. Plus, inviting a friend over to cook together can be a great way to bond and create new memories while digging into our backgrounds. It’s also important to give ourselves grace. Many of us might feel guilt or confusion about not fully fitting into either culture. It's okay to feel lost sometimes. Embracing our unique blend of cultures can be empowering, but it’s a journey that takes time. Finding even one person who understands this struggle can help us feel less alone in our experiences. Anyone else navigating this complex landscape? It can be tough, but sharing our journeys and connecting with one another can make it a bit easier. What’s been your experience with cultural identity in your family?
