Navigating cultural identity: How do you balance your birth culture with your adoptive culture in daily life?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating cultural identity can feel like walking a tightrope, especially for many of us who are international adoptees. We often find ourselves trying to balance the rich traditions and values of our birth culture with the influences of our adoptive culture. It’s a unique experience that can bring about both joy and confusion, and many of us know that feeling of being pulled in different directions. One thing that has helped me is actively seeking out ways to celebrate my birth culture. Whether it's cooking traditional meals, listening to music from my home country, or even joining local cultural events, these small acts ground me and remind me of where I come from. I remember the first time I cooked a dish that my birth family used to make — it was a simple recipe, but the connection I felt to my roots was profound. Sharing that meal with friends who are also interested in learning about my culture made it even more special. Another approach many of us find helpful is engaging with others who share similar experiences. Finding even one person who understands the complexities of navigating between two cultures can be transformative. I met someone through a local support group, and we started meeting regularly to talk about our experiences. Just having someone to share those mixed feelings with — the pride, the confusion, the longing — has made a huge difference. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in this journey. On days when the cultural divide feels overwhelming, I try to remind myself that it’s okay to embrace both sides of my identity. Some days, I might lean more into my adoptive culture, while other days, I might find myself longing for the familiarity of my birth culture. It's all part of the process. I’ve learned that being an international adoptee means creating a unique blend of identities that is entirely my own. Anyone else navigating this balancing act? It would be great to hear how you’re managing the mix of cultures in your daily life. Sometimes just connecting with someone who understands makes all the difference.
