Navigating the feelings of being caught between two cultures as an international adoptee

Many of us know that feeling of being caught between two cultures as international adoptees. It’s like we have one foot in our birth culture and another in the culture we were raised in, and sometimes it feels like we don’t fully belong to either. This duality can create a unique mix of emotions, from pride in our heritage to confusion about where we fit in.
One thing that has really helped me navigate these feelings is actively seeking out stories from other adoptees. Hearing about how others handle the challenges – whether it’s dealing with cultural misunderstandings or celebrating our backgrounds – can be so validating. I remember finding a group of adoptees who share experiences similar to mine, and just knowing I wasn’t alone made a huge difference. We started meeting online to chat about everything from language barriers to family dynamics, and it felt so good to connect with people who truly get it.
Another approach that some of us find helpful is creating our own cultural blend. This might mean incorporating traditions from our birth countries into our daily lives, even if it’s just cooking a dish or celebrating a holiday. It might feel small, but these little acts can help us feel more connected to our roots while also embracing the culture we grew up in. I’ve found that sharing these experiences with others—maybe even inviting a friend or two to join in—can deepen those connections and spark conversations about identity.
And let’s not overlook the tough days. Sometimes, we might feel overwhelmed by questions about our identity or struggle with feelings of not being “enough” in either culture. It’s okay to acknowledge those moments. Talking to someone who understands, even just one person, can lighten that burden. I once reached out to a fellow adoptee during a tough time, and our conversation helped me feel seen and heard. It reminded me that we’re all navigating this journey together.
Anyone else feeling caught between cultures? It can be so isolating at times, but sharing our stories can truly make a difference. What’s helped you connect with others who understand this unique experience?
