Navigating cultural identity: do you ever feel caught between two worlds?

Do you ever feel like you’re caught between two worlds, trying to navigate your cultural identity as an international adoptee? Many of us know that feeling all too well. It can be tricky to balance the culture we were born into with the one we were raised in, and sometimes it feels like we don’t fully belong to either.
One thing that really helped me was finding other adoptees who share similar experiences. Just knowing that there are people out there who understand the unique challenges we face—like navigating family expectations or dealing with questions about our heritage—has been a game-changer. Many of us have created small support groups or even just regular hangouts to talk openly about our journeys. It’s comforting to share those moments of confusion and joy with others who truly get it.
Another approach some of us try is immersing ourselves in our birth culture when we can. This could mean attending cultural festivals or exploring traditional foods from our homeland. It’s a way to embrace our roots, even if we didn’t grow up with them. Plus, these experiences can spark meaningful conversations with others, deepening our connections to both our birth culture and our adoptive one.
It’s also important to recognize that feeling out of place is part of our journey. Many of us have faced moments where we felt we didn’t fit in with our adoptive family or friends, and that can be really isolating. Talking to someone who’s been through that can make a big difference. Even if it starts with sharing stories online, those connections can lead to friendships that help bridge those gaps.
Anyone else feeling this way? Sometimes just having one conversation with someone who understands can change everything. What’s helped you navigate your own cultural identity?
