Navigating cultural identity when you feel caught between two worlds

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know what it feels like to be caught between two worlds, especially as international adoptees. We often navigate the complexities of our cultural identity, feeling like we’re neither fully here nor there. It can be a lonely experience, but connecting with others who understand can really help ease that burden. One thing that helped me was embracing the parts of my cultural background that resonate with me, even if they feel distant or fragmented. For instance, I started exploring my birth culture through food, music, and traditions. It felt empowering to recreate dishes from my birth country, using recipes I found online or learned from other adoptees. Sharing these meals with friends opened up conversations about our different backgrounds, and I found that many people are genuinely interested in learning about cultural identity. It’s a great way to connect with others and bring a piece of our heritage into everyday life. Another approach some of us try is seeking out community events or support groups specifically for international adoptees. I found a local meet-up where people share their stories and experiences. Just being in a room full of people who get it, who also navigate the complexities of being part of two cultures, has been incredibly validating. It’s like we can drop the masks and just be ourselves. If you haven’t found a group yet, consider reaching out to someone nearby who might be going through the same journey. Those connections can make a world of difference. There are also times when we feel the weight of expectation from both cultures, and that can be challenging. Sometimes, we might struggle with feelings of inadequacy, like we don't quite belong to either side. Remember, it’s okay to feel this way and to take your time exploring your identity. Many of us are still figuring things out, and that’s part of the journey. Anyone else feeling this way? It can be tough, but sharing our experiences can lighten the load. What’s helped you navigate your cultural identity? Sometimes, just one conversation with someone who truly understands makes all the difference.
