How do you cope with feelings of abandonment when relationships get tough?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of abandonment all too well, especially when relationships start to wobble. It can feel like that familiar ache from our past, rearing its head just when we thought we were making progress. The truth is, the fear of being left behind can be overwhelming, and it often triggers those old wounds from our time in foster care. One thing that has helped me is recognizing that our feelings are valid and rooted in real experiences. When relationships get tough, it’s easy to slip into that mindset of “here we go again.” Instead of letting that fear take over, I try to pause and remind myself that not everyone will leave. Some people are genuinely there to support us, even when things get rocky. Another approach that some of us find useful is reaching out to those who truly get it. Connecting with fellow foster care survivors has been a game-changer for me. Just having one or two people in my life who understand the unique challenges we face—like trust issues or that constant worry about being abandoned—makes a world of difference. We share our fears and remind each other that we are not alone in this. Sometimes, just talking it out can ease the weight of those feelings. Setting boundaries can also play a huge role in coping with abandonment fears. We’ve learned that it’s okay to communicate our needs to those we care about. When we express our fears openly, it can create a safe space for our loved ones to reassure us. For instance, if I’m feeling particularly anxious in a relationship, I’ll let my friend know that I might need some extra check-ins for a while. It’s surprising how many people want to show up for us when we just ask. So, how do you cope when those feelings of abandonment creep in? Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands can change everything. I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you navigate through tough times.
