How do you navigate relationships with friends who can't understand the trauma of foster care?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating friendships can feel especially challenging when you’ve experienced the unique trauma of foster care. Many of us know the frustration of trying to explain our feelings and experiences to friends who just can’t grasp what we’ve been through. It can be isolating, and sometimes we might feel like we’re speaking a different language. One thing that has helped me is being open about my experiences, but also setting boundaries. It’s okay to let friends know that certain topics are off-limits for now or that you might need some space when memories surface. I found that sharing my story in bits and pieces helped my friends understand me better, but I also had to be clear about what I was comfortable discussing. This way, I felt safer while still trying to maintain those connections. Another approach that many of us have found valuable is to seek out fellow survivors. Having someone who truly understands the nuances of foster care trauma can be a lifeline. I met someone through a support group who had similar experiences, and it was such a relief. We started chatting regularly, and just knowing that someone else felt the same way made the tough days a little more manageable. If you can connect with someone who shares your background, it might help ease the burden of explaining everything to friends who don’t fully understand. It’s also important to remember that not everyone will get it, and that’s okay. Some friends might not be able to provide the support we need, and it’s natural to feel hurt by that. But this doesn’t diminish our worth or the validity of our experiences. It’s about finding those who can see us for who we are, scars and all. Anyone else navigating friendships like this? What’s helped you connect or cope when friends just don’t get it? Sometimes just sharing our stories can change everything.
