How do you cope with the feelings of abandonment that sometimes resurface in your daily life?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the sting of abandonment all too well. Whether it’s the memories of being placed in foster care, the feeling of being uprooted from one home to another, or the worry that those we care about might leave us too, these feelings can resurface unexpectedly in our daily lives. It’s tough, and sometimes it feels like we’re carrying a weight that others just don’t understand. One thing that has helped me cope is creating a little ritual for myself when those feelings creep in. I take a moment to acknowledge what I’m feeling instead of pushing it away. Maybe I’ll journal about a memory or a thought that’s triggered those feelings. This not only helps me process but also gives me a chance to reflect on how far I’ve come since my time in the system. I’ve found that sharing these moments with someone who gets it has been transformative. Finding a friend or even someone from this community to exchange experiences with can really help validate what we’re feeling. Another approach some of us try is grounding ourselves in the present. When thoughts of abandonment swirl around, I focus on what’s around me—my favorite mug, the sunlight streaming through the window, or the sound of my favorite song. This practice helps to remind me that I am safe now, and it’s a small but powerful way to reorient ourselves when those old feelings bubble up. We might also benefit from connecting with others who share our experiences. Whether it’s online or in person, opening up to someone who understands what it felt like to be in foster care can create a sense of belonging that counters those feelings of abandonment. I found someone in this community who really resonates with my journey, and just talking to them made me feel less isolated. Sometimes, just knowing that we’re not alone in this struggle can be a huge relief. What about you? Anyone else dealing with these feelings? Sometimes just talking about it with someone who truly understands can make all the difference. Would love to hear what helps you cope!
