Navigating friendships when trust is a huge issue for me

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know how challenging it can be to navigate friendships when trust feels like a fragile thread. As foster care survivors, we often carry the weight of past experiences that can make it hard to open up and let others in. It’s like we’re constantly tiptoeing around our feelings, worried about being hurt or abandoned again. One thing that really helped me was finding a small group of fellow survivors who understand what I’m going through. We started meeting up regularly, sharing our stories, and gradually building trust. It was comforting to know that I wasn't alone in feeling this way, and having even one person who truly gets it made a huge difference. It's okay to take your time with trust—it's not a race, and we can support each other through it. Another approach some of us try is being upfront about our trust issues. When we start to form new friendships, I’ve found that sharing a little about my past and how it affects my relationships can help others understand where I’m coming from. It can feel vulnerable, but many of us are surprised at how receptive people can be. You might find that opening up creates a safe space for both you and your new friend to express your feelings and fears. Also, setting boundaries is crucial. We can be our own best advocates by clearly communicating what we need in our friendships. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but establishing these boundaries helps us maintain our sense of safety while slowly allowing others in. We can take baby steps together; it’s okay to let someone in just a little at a time. Anyone else navigating this tricky path? It can feel isolating, but sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands changes everything. What strategies have you found helpful in building trust with friends?
