How do you cope with feelings of abandonment even years after leaving the system?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of abandonment can linger long after we’ve left the system. It’s like a shadow that follows us around, reminding us of the instability and uncertainty we faced. Even years later, those feelings can pop up unexpectedly, triggered by something as simple as a missed call or a familiar song. One thing that helped me was finding a supportive community of fellow foster care survivors. Connecting with others who truly understand what we’ve been through has been invaluable. I remember sharing my feelings with someone who had similar experiences, and just talking about our shared challenges made me feel less alone. We started reaching out regularly, and those conversations became a safe space to process our feelings together. When the feelings of abandonment hit, I also try to ground myself in the present. It can be easy to spiral into thoughts of the past, but taking a moment to appreciate where I am now helps. Some of us have found that writing down our feelings can be therapeutic, too. Journaling about our experiences, even just a few lines, helps us articulate those emotions and see them more clearly. Plus, it can be a great way to track our progress over time. Another approach I've found helpful is creating a small ritual to honor my journey. Whether it’s lighting a candle or spending a few minutes in quiet reflection, these moments remind me that I have come so far, even if the feelings of abandonment still surface sometimes. It’s a way to acknowledge our past while also celebrating our strength and resilience. Anyone else still grappling with these feelings? It can be tough, but sometimes just sharing our stories with someone who gets it can lighten the load a little. What has helped you cope with those lingering feelings?
