How do you navigate friendships when you feel like your foster care experience sets you apart?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of being on the outside looking in when it comes to friendships. Navigating relationships can be especially tricky when our experiences in foster care set us apart. It’s like there’s this invisible wall that sometimes makes it hard for others to really understand us. One thing that helped me was finding spaces where I could connect with people who have similar backgrounds. Just knowing that others have gone through similar struggles can be such a relief. For instance, I started joining local support groups and online forums where we could share our stories. In those moments, it felt like we were all just being real — no need to explain ourselves or worry about judgment. Having even one person who truly gets it can make a world of difference. Another approach that’s been useful is being open about our experiences when we're comfortable. This doesn’t mean we have to share everything right away, but sometimes giving just a glimpse into our past can help friends understand us better. I remember telling a close friend about a specific moment from my time in foster care. It sparked a deeper conversation, and surprisingly, it brought us closer. It can be scary, but sharing can help build that bridge of understanding. You might also find that creating new rituals or traditions with friends can help strengthen those bonds. Whether it’s a weekly coffee chat or a casual movie night, having a consistent time to connect can foster a sense of belonging. Plus, it gives us all a chance to just be ourselves without the weight of our past hanging overhead. Anyone else navigating friendships in this way? Sharing our experiences can be tough, but sometimes just one genuine conversation with someone who understands makes everything feel a bit lighter. What’s worked for you?
