How do you navigate conversations about your depression with friends who seem to dismiss it?

Navigating conversations about our depression can feel like walking a tightrope, especially when our friends don’t seem to fully grasp what we’re going through. Many of us have had that moment when we begin to share how we feel, only to be met with dismissive comments like “just think positive” or “you’ll get over it.” It's frustrating and can make us feel even more isolated.
One thing that helped me was to be as open as possible about how depression affects my daily life. Instead of just saying, “I’m feeling down,” I learned to share specific experiences—like how getting out of bed feels like climbing a mountain some days or how social gatherings can drain me. When we articulate our feelings in a way that paints a picture, it can sometimes spark more understanding. And if it doesn’t, well, that’s a whole other challenge we might face together.
Another approach some of us try is to set boundaries around our conversations. If a friend consistently minimizes our feelings, it might be helpful to gently let them know how their words impact us. Something like, “I appreciate your intentions, but when you say that, it makes me feel unheard.” It’s tough to put ourselves out there, but we deserve to have our feelings validated, and sometimes our friends need a little guidance to understand.
Connecting with others who truly get it can also be a game changer. I found someone in a similar situation, and we began talking regularly about our experiences. Having even one person who understands this struggle changes everything. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone and that we can talk about our feelings without fear of judgment.
Anyone else dealing with this? It can be so disheartening when friends don’t seem to understand, but I’d love to hear how you navigate these conversations. What’s worked for you?
