Has anyone else felt guilty for not being able to meet expectations at work or home?

Has anyone else felt that heavy weight of guilt for not being able to meet expectations at work or home? Many of us know that feeling all too well. It’s like we’re constantly trying to juggle everything, but the moment we drop one ball, the guilt seeps in and takes over. I’ve found that one of the first steps in dealing with this guilt is acknowledging that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. With depression, we often face an uphill battle just to get through the day. Some days, simply getting out of bed or responding to messages can feel monumental. So when we find ourselves unable to meet deadlines or keep up with household chores, it’s easy to spiral into self-blame. I’ve learned that talking about this with someone who understands can really lighten the load. There’s a certain relief in sharing our experiences — it reminds us we’re not alone in this struggle. Another approach that’s helped me is setting realistic expectations for myself. For instance, instead of aiming to have a perfectly clean house, I focus on just getting one small task done, like washing a few dishes or putting away laundry. Celebrating those small wins can shift our mindset. It’s a reminder that we’re making progress, even if it doesn’t look like the “ideal” we often see in social media or our workplaces. Also, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the expectations at work, it might help to communicate with your team. Many of us have been surprised by how understanding others can be when we share that we’re facing challenges. I once opened up to a coworker about my struggles with depression, and it turned into a supportive conversation where we could both vent about our experiences. It felt so refreshing to connect in that way. The guilt can be suffocating at times, but connecting with even one person who gets it can make a massive difference. Anyone else navigating this guilt? What have you found helps you cope with the pressure? Sometimes just talking it out can really change everything.
