How do you cope with the pressure to appear "normal" when you're struggling?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the heavy weight of trying to appear "normal" while we’re struggling with depression. It’s like wearing a mask that gets heavier with each passing day. We might feel the pressure from friends, family, or even ourselves to act like everything's okay, even when we’re not. It can be exhausting to keep up that facade. One thing that helped me was finding small ways to be honest about my feelings without feeling like I had to spill everything. When someone asks how I’m doing, I might say, “I’m hanging in there,” or “It’s been a tough week.” This way, I’m not lying, but I’m also not diving into the deep end right away. It’s okay to acknowledge that things aren’t perfect; it can even open the door to deeper conversations with those who care about us. Sometimes, just having one person who understands what we’re going through can make a world of difference. Another approach some of us try is setting boundaries around our social interactions. If a gathering feels overwhelming, it’s okay to skip it or leave early. We don’t owe anyone an explanation beyond, “I need some time for myself.” Taking care of our mental health is a priority, and those who truly care will understand. Many of us have found that sharing our struggles with a close friend or even in a safe space can help lighten that burden, creating a sense of community and connection that feels so vital. Finally, it can be helpful to shift our focus from what “normal” looks like to what feels right for us. Maybe that means giving ourselves permission to have bad days and accepting that it’s okay to not fit into the mold. Embracing our unique experiences allows us to find our own version of normal. When we connect with others who share our struggles, it reinforces the idea that we’re not alone in this. Anyone else feeling the weight of trying to appear “normal”? I’d love to hear how you cope with that pressure and what’s helped you find your own space to just be.
