Many of us know that sinking feeling when we realize we can’t meet our own expectations or the expectations of others. It’s like a weight pressing down on our chest, a constant reminder of what we feel we should be doing but just can’t muster the energy for. The guilt can be overwhelming, especially on tough days when even basic tasks feel monumental.
One thing that has really helped me is shifting my focus from what I can’t do to what I can manage, even if it feels small. Instead of thinking, “I should be able to go out and socialize,” I try to remind myself, “It’s okay to stay in and take care of myself today.” This simple mindset shift doesn’t erase the guilt completely, but it makes it a bit more bearable. We all have our limits, and recognizing them can help us be kinder to ourselves.
Another approach I’ve found useful is sharing these feelings with someone who understands. I connected with a fellow community member, and just talking about our struggles helped lighten the load. We both admitted how hard it is to feel like we’re letting people down, and that sense of validation made a difference. Sometimes, just knowing we’re not alone in this guilt can help us cope a little better.
It’s also important to remember that expectations, whether from ourselves or others, are often shaped by societal standards that don’t consider our unique experiences with depression. When we take a step back and recognize that it’s okay not to meet every expectation, we can start to redefine what success looks like for us personally. Maybe today’s success is making it through a rough patch, and that’s enough.
Anyone else wrestling with guilt around expectations? It can feel isolating, but sharing our experiences can really help us feel more connected. What strategies have you found that work for you?
