Feeling out of place in professional settings — has anyone else experienced this?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever walked into a meeting and felt like you were the odd one out, like everyone else had a blueprint for the unspoken rules that you somehow missed? Many of us from working-class backgrounds know that feeling all too well. It’s tough navigating professional settings where the culture seems so different from what we’re used to. One thing that I’ve found helpful is to seek out those little moments of common ground. For example, when I started to notice colleagues talking about their weekend plans—going to fancy brunch spots or attending exclusive events—I hesitated to share my own experiences. But eventually, I found a couple of coworkers who appreciated the more down-to-earth activities I enjoy, like local markets and backyard BBQs. It was a relief to find others who also grew up with a different set of norms. These small chats made me feel less isolated and helped me realize that our diverse backgrounds can actually enrich the workplace. Another approach some of us try is to bring elements of our backgrounds into our professional lives. For instance, I’ve started incorporating my experiences into my presentations or discussions. Sharing stories about my upbringing or how it shaped my work ethic not only felt empowering, but it also sparked conversations with others who relate. It’s amazing how when we voice our unique perspectives, we can find allies and create connections that make the workplace feel a little more welcoming. The isolation can be overwhelming, but reaching out to someone else who understands this struggle can make a big difference. I’ve connected with a mentor who also comes from a working-class background. Having even one person who truly gets it can ease that feeling of being out of place and help navigate professional challenges together. Anyone else feeling out of place in professional settings? I’d love to hear your stories and what’s helped you find your footing. Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference!
