Many of us know that feeling of looking around at our peers and sensing that we don’t quite measure up. When you come from a working-class background, it can often feel like you’re navigating a world that’s set up for others. You might find yourself comparing your experiences, achievements, or lifestyle to those who have had more privilege, and that can stir up some heavy feelings of inadequacy.
One thing that has helped me is reframing my perspective. Instead of focusing on what I lack compared to others, I try to recognize the unique strengths and resilience that come from my background. We’ve had to hustle, adapt, and find creative solutions in ways that many haven’t. Sharing these experiences with others who understand can be so powerful. I started connecting with a few friends who come from similar backgrounds, and having those conversations made me realize I’m not alone in feeling this way. It’s comforting to know that others also grapple with these feelings, and it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come.
Another approach that some of us find useful is celebrating our own victories, no matter how small they seem. Whether it’s landing a job, completing a project, or simply getting through a tough week, acknowledging these moments can help build our confidence. I started a little journal to jot down my achievements and the challenges I’ve overcome. Looking back at that can help shift my mindset when I’m feeling inadequate. It’s also great for sharing with friends who might be feeling the same way, reinforcing that we all have our own journeys.
Lastly, it’s essential to create a supportive network. Engaging with others who share our experiences can help alleviate some of that heaviness. One thing that really helped was finding someone nearby who deals with this too — we started meeting weekly and it made the hard days easier. Just having someone to talk to who truly gets it can change everything, and it reminds us that we’re not defined by our socio-economic status.
Anyone else feeling this pressure? What have you found helpful in navigating those feelings of inadequacy? Let’s share our experiences and lift each other up!
