Navigating social events where I feel out of place due to my background

Many of us have felt that familiar knot in our stomachs before heading into a social event where we know we might not quite fit in. Whether it’s a work function, a family gathering, or a community event, the feeling of being out of place due to our working-class background can be overwhelming. We might find ourselves worrying about what to say, how to dress, or even how to navigate conversations that seem to revolve around experiences we can’t relate to.
One thing that really helped me was finding a buddy to go with. Having someone by my side who understands the struggle made a huge difference. We could share knowing glances during awkward moments and lean on each other when conversations turned to topics that felt alien to us. Plus, it was comforting to chat with someone who gets it, making the experience a bit less daunting.
Another approach that has worked for many of us is preparing some conversation starters ahead of time. It can feel intimidating when the talk shifts to vacations in Bali or private school experiences. Instead, I’ve found it helpful to think about topics I feel comfortable discussing, like local events or shared interests that resonate with our backgrounds. This way, I can steer the conversation toward something I enjoy, and it often opens up dialogue about experiences we can all relate to.
When we do find ourselves in these spaces, it’s important to remember that it’s okay to not have everything in common. Many of us have unique stories that can bring something valuable to the table. Embracing our backgrounds can actually spark curiosity and connection with others. I’ve had some rewarding conversations just by being honest about my experiences—sometimes, people are genuinely interested in hearing about the different paths we've taken.
Anyone else feeling this way about social events? Have you found anything that helps you feel more at ease? Sometimes just connecting with someone who gets it can change everything.
