Sharing the feeling of being out of place in professional settings: how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of walking into a professional setting and instantly feeling out of place. Whether it's the way people discuss their backgrounds, their references to private school experiences, or just the way they seem to navigate the workplace effortlessly, it can be a tough environment for those of us from working-class backgrounds. It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, and it can be exhausting. One thing that really helped me was finding a few colleagues who share similar backgrounds. We started a small lunch group where we could talk openly about our experiences. This made a world of difference! Sharing stories about our childhoods, the pressure of financial struggles, and even the imposter syndrome many of us feel in these spaces helped normalize our experiences. It felt like coming home to a supportive family, even if just for an hour. Another approach some of us try is to lean into our unique perspectives. I’ve found that my working-class background offers a different viewpoint that can be really valuable in discussions. Sometimes, I remind myself that the grit and determination we’ve developed through our experiences can be assets in the workplace. It’s okay to own that and share it with others. Plus, having even one person to connect with who understands the nuances of our backgrounds can really help us feel more grounded and confident. It’s also important to acknowledge the discomfort we feel. Many of us might struggle with feelings of inadequacy or being underestimated in professional settings. It’s okay to admit that sometimes we feel like outsiders. Talking about these feelings with someone who ‘gets it’ can help lighten the load. Just knowing we're not alone can make those tough days a bit more bearable. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who understands shifts the whole perspective. What’s helped you cope in these situations? Would love to hear your experiences!
