Navigating friendships after trauma: How do you choose who to share your experiences with?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know how isolating it can feel after experiencing trauma, especially from conflict. It’s like carrying a weight that others don’t always see or understand. When it comes to friendships, deciding who to share our experiences with can be especially tricky. We want to connect, but we also need to protect ourselves. One thing that helped me was to look for people who have shown understanding in the past. Maybe they’ve shared their own struggles, or they’ve listened without judgment. Having even one person in your life who truly gets it can create a safe space where you feel comfortable opening up about your experiences. I found someone who had also faced similar conflicts, and just knowing that they understood my feelings made all the difference. We started talking regularly, and it really eased the burden of feeling alone. Another approach some of us try is to start small. Instead of diving into the deep end right away, you might share a little about your feelings and see how the other person responds. This can help gauge if they’re a safe person to confide in. It’s okay to take your time—trust is built gradually, especially after trauma. If they respond with empathy and curiosity, it’s a good sign that you might be able to share more with them later. Sometimes, it’s also about setting boundaries. We might encounter people who unintentionally bring up painful memories or who just don’t know how to respond appropriately. It’s perfectly okay to step back from those conversations or friendships if they don’t feel supportive. Protecting your emotional well-being has to come first, even if it feels hard to distance yourself from someone you once felt close to. Anyone else navigating friendships like this? Would love to hear how you’ve chosen who to share your experiences with — sometimes just talking to someone who gets it makes all the difference.
