How do you cope with the constant flashbacks or reminders of your experiences?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the weight of constant flashbacks or reminders that pull us back into experiences we’d rather forget. It can feel like we’re living in two worlds at once, where the past invades our present without warning. It’s tough, and sometimes it seems like there’s no escape. But sharing our strategies can help lighten that load, at least a little. One thing that’s helped me is creating a grounding toolkit. This might include things that soothe your senses, like a favorite song, a comforting scent, or even a small object that reminds you of a safe place. When a flashback hits, having these tools at hand can help pull us back to the present. I keep a little pouch with me that has a piece of fabric from a loved one, and when I touch it, it reminds me of their support — it’s a little anchor in those turbulent moments. Another approach some of us find beneficial is journaling. Writing down our thoughts and feelings can sometimes help us process those experiences without feeling overwhelmed. We might even find it helpful to write letters to our past selves or to people we lost along the way. This can feel cathartic, and sharing what we write with someone who understands can make it even more powerful. I’ve found a couple of people who also write, and we exchange letters — it’s a way to feel less alone in our journeys. Connecting with others who’ve been through similar situations can also ease the burden of those flashbacks. One thing that really helped me was finding a small group of fellow survivors. We meet up occasionally, and just being in a space where we can talk about our experiences without judgment makes a world of difference. Sometimes, just hearing someone else say, "I understand," can reduce that feeling of isolation. Anyone else dealing with these constant reminders? I’d love to hear what’s helped you find your way through the flashbacks. Sometimes it just takes one conversation with someone who truly gets it to make things feel a little lighter.
