We’ve all been there—going about our day, and suddenly, something triggers a memory from our past experiences. It might be a sound, a smell, or even a location that brings back a flood of emotions we thought we had tucked away. For many of us who are survivors of war or conflict, these reminders can feel overwhelming and isolating.
One thing that really helps is creating a grounding practice. When you notice a reminder creeping in, take a moment to breathe deeply and ground yourself in the present. A few deep breaths, focusing on where you are right now, can create a little space between that memory and your current reality. Some of us find it useful to carry a small item that reminds us of safety or peace—like a stone or a piece of fabric. When we hold it, it helps us reconnect with the present moment, reminding us that we are here, safe, and not back in that past experience.
Another approach that many of us have found useful is sharing our feelings with someone who understands. Connecting with someone who shares a similar background can make a world of difference. Recently, I met someone in my area who has also experienced the effects of conflict, and just talking about those memories has made the hard days feel a little lighter. Sometimes, just knowing there’s someone who gets it can help us navigate those sudden reminders a bit more easily.
Journaling can also be a powerful outlet for us. When those memories surface, writing them down can help us process the feelings tied to them. It doesn’t have to be structured—just letting the words flow can be freeing. We can reflect on how far we’ve come and recognize that while those memories are part of our story, they don’t define us.
Anyone else dealing with this? It’s such a tough journey, and sometimes having one real conversation with someone who understands makes all the difference. I’d love to hear what’s helped you cope with those sudden reminders.
