Opening up about our identities can be a rollercoaster, can’t it? Many of us have faced unexpected reactions when we finally share who we are. One of the most surprising things I've encountered is the sheer range of reactions. Some people have been incredibly supportive, almost like they were waiting for me to open up. They share their own experiences, and suddenly, it feels like we’re in this together. On the flip side, I've also faced confusion or dismissal — moments when someone just didn’t get it, or worse, downplayed what I was feeling. It’s such a vulnerable position to be in, and those dismissive reactions can sting, leaving us feeling isolated when all we wanted was connection. Another experience many of us have had is when people share their misconceptions or stereotypes. It’s disheartening, especially when they make assumptions based on what they’ve heard rather than what we’ve shared. I remember one person saying something that was meant to be funny but ended up feeling like a jab.
