Sharing experiences of discrimination — how do you cope with the reactions of others?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Thiyya community know how tough it can be to navigate the reactions of others when we share our experiences of discrimination. Whether it’s a dismissive comment or outright prejudice, those moments can leave us feeling vulnerable and isolated. It’s important to remember that our feelings are valid, and we’re not alone in this. One thing that has helped me is finding ways to process these experiences before reacting. Taking a moment to breathe and collect my thoughts can make a huge difference. Instead of responding immediately, I sometimes jot down how I feel about the situation. This helps me clarify my emotions and decide if I want to engage further or just let it go. Many of us have found that talking it out with someone who understands can also provide clarity — even just sharing a message with a friend who gets it can lighten the load. Another approach I’ve tried is to create a “support mantra.” This is a phrase I repeat to myself when I start to feel overwhelmed by others' reactions. Something like, “Their opinion does not define my worth” can be a powerful reminder to stay grounded. It’s amazing how just a few affirming words can help shift our focus back to our own strength and identity, especially since we often face unique challenges within our community. If you’re comfortable, connecting with others from our community can be a game-changer. Many of us have experienced similar forms of discrimination, and sharing those stories can foster a sense of solidarity. I found someone nearby who understands what I’m going through, and we’ve started meeting up to share our experiences. It’s comforting to realize we’re not alone in facing these challenges, and being able to talk openly about them has been healing. Anyone else dealing with the weight of others' reactions? What strategies have helped you cope? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it can change everything.
