Do you sometimes feel the need to hide your Thiyya identity in certain social situations?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Thiyya community know that feeling of wanting to hide our identity in certain social situations. Whether it’s due to misunderstandings about our culture or the fear of being judged, it can be tough to navigate spaces where we feel our identity might not be welcomed or understood. One thing that often helps me is finding smaller groups where I can be open about my Thiyya roots. Sharing stories about our traditions or even our favorite dishes can break the ice and create a sense of belonging. I remember one gathering where I casually mentioned a festival celebration we have, and suddenly the conversation blossomed. It felt good to connect with others who appreciated my background, and it reminded me that I don’t have to hide who I am. Another approach that some of us find helpful is preparing for those awkward moments. If you sense that a conversation might veer into uncomfortable territory, having a few lighthearted responses ready can ease the tension. For example, if someone makes a comment that feels dismissive, you might say something like, “Well, we Thiyyas have some pretty awesome food traditions that I’d be happy to share!” This can redirect the conversation positively and showcase our culture without feeling defensive. The isolation can feel heavy at times, especially when we’re navigating spaces where our identity isn’t fully understood. But connecting with even one person who can relate to our experiences can lighten that load. I found someone nearby who shares similar struggles, and we started meeting up regularly. It’s amazing how just having that one supportive person can make a world of difference. Anyone else feeling the need to hide your Thiyya identity sometimes? How do you navigate those moments? Let’s share our experiences and see how we can support each other.
