The struggle of finding community when our identity is often misunderstood or overlooked

Many of us know the feeling of being overlooked or misunderstood because of our Thiyya identity. It can be tough when we don’t fit neatly into societal expectations or when our experiences are brushed aside. Sometimes, it feels like we’re navigating a world that just doesn’t see us, and that can lead to a deep sense of isolation.
One thing that has helped me is actively seeking out spaces where our unique stories are valued. Connecting with fellow Thiyya folks who share similar backgrounds has been a game changer. I remember joining a local gathering where we could share our experiences openly. It felt incredible to finally be in a room where our struggles were acknowledged and understood. If you haven’t found a local group yet, maybe try reaching out online. Many of us have found that just knowing someone else is out there, dealing with the same challenges, brings a sense of belonging.
Another approach I’ve found helpful is sharing our culture and traditions with others. Whether it’s through storytelling, cooking, or art, expressing who we are fosters connection. I recently started a small cooking circle with some friends, where we make traditional dishes together. It’s not just about food; it’s about sharing our heritage and creating a space where we can talk about what it means to be Thiyya. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new people who appreciate our identity.
It’s also important to be gentle with ourselves during this journey. The struggle for community can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when we encounter misunderstanding. Remembering that it’s okay to take breaks and focus on self-care can make a difference. Many of us have found solace in journaling our thoughts or connecting with nature as a way to recharge.
Anyone else feeling this struggle to find community? It can be tough, but sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. I’d love to hear about your experiences and what has helped you along the way.
