Sharing experiences of being misunderstood or judged by outsiders for being Thiyya

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Thiyya community know the feeling of being misunderstood or judged by outsiders. It's like wearing a badge of our heritage that some people just don’t get, and it can leave us feeling isolated and frustrated. Whether it’s the assumptions about our lifestyle, our traditions, or even our ambitions, it can be tough to navigate those conversations where others don’t see us for who we truly are. One experience that stands out for many of us is when we mention our roots, and people respond with stereotypes or misconceptions. It’s disheartening when our rich culture gets reduced to a few clichés. I’ve found that sharing personal stories about what Thiyya means to us can often shift the narrative. When I talk about the warmth of our festivals or the strength of our community, it opens up a more meaningful dialogue. It’s a way to educate those around us, but it can also feel exhausting at times, especially when it seems like we have to justify our identity. Another challenge we face is the judgment that comes from our own community. Sometimes, we might feel pressure to conform to what others expect of us as Thiyya individuals. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy or guilt when we don’t fit those molds. I’ve found it helpful to connect with others who share this identity, even in small ways. Just having a conversation with someone who understands the nuances of our culture can be a relief. It’s like finding a safe space where we can be ourselves without the fear of judgment. Many of us also deal with the lack of representation in broader society. It can feel alienating when our stories aren’t reflected in media or public discussions, leading to a sense of invisibility. Sharing our experiences on platforms where we can be heard has been empowering. Creating spaces where our voices matter, even if it’s just among ourselves, fosters a sense of belonging. Anyone else feeling this way? Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it makes all the difference. What experiences have you had with being misunderstood? Let’s share and support one another.
