How do you handle comments from people who don't understand why you chose surrogacy?

Navigating the world of surrogacy can be a deeply emotional journey, and one of the challenges many of us face is dealing with comments from people who just don’t understand our choices. It can feel isolating when others question our decisions or make insensitive remarks about our experience.
One thing that helped me was finding a small group of friends who are also on this path. We share our experiences and the challenges we face, including the well-meaning but often misguided comments from others. Just having that safe space to vent and share our feelings made a huge difference. When someone asks, “Why can’t you just carry your own baby?” we can lean on each other for support, reminding ourselves that our journey is valid and deeply personal.
Another approach some of us have found useful is to prepare thoughtful responses for those awkward moments. For instance, when someone brings up their confusion about surrogacy, I try to share a little about my reasons—whether it's health issues, age, or simply that I want to give someone the chance to experience being a parent through surrogacy. This doesn’t always change their perspective, but it can shift the conversation to a more positive and informative space.
It’s also important to practice self-care when facing these comments. Many of us have found that stepping back and reminding ourselves why we chose surrogacy helps us cope with the negativity from others. Surrounding ourselves with supportive voices, whether friends, family, or those we connect with in this community, helps reinforce that we’re not alone in this journey.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. I’d love to hear how you handle comments or if you’ve created your own support network!
