Navigating conversations with friends or family who don’t understand the surrogacy process can feel like a huge uphill battle. Many of us have found ourselves in awkward situations, trying to explain something so personal and complex to people who just don’t get it. It’s tough, and sometimes it feels like we’re speaking a different language.
One thing that has helped me is being clear about my feelings from the start. When someone asks, “Why are you doing this?” I try to share my passion for helping others build their families. I explain that surrogacy isn’t just about carrying a baby; it’s about creating a meaningful connection and being part of something bigger. Framing it this way often opens up the conversation and helps them see it from a different perspective.
Another approach some of us use is to share resources, like articles or videos that explain the surrogacy process in a straightforward way. This can take the pressure off us to be the sole educators, and it gives our loved ones a chance to learn at their own pace. I once sent a link to a documentary about surrogates, and it sparked a conversation with my sister that really deepened our connection. It was much easier to discuss the emotional aspects when she had a better understanding of what I was experiencing.
It’s also okay to set boundaries. If a friend or family member is being dismissive or asking insensitive questions, we can gently express that these conversations are challenging for us. I’ve had to remind a few people that I’m happy to talk about my journey, but I need them to approach it with kindness and an open mind. It’s not about shutting them out; it’s about protecting our emotional well-being.
The isolation can be tough, but finding others who are on the same journey makes a world of difference. I’ve connected with a couple of fellow surrogates, and we share our experiences and strategies for these conversations. Just knowing we’re not alone in this helps so much.
Anyone else dealing with similar conversations? What’s worked for you when trying to explain your surrogacy journey to those who don’t quite understand? Would love to hear your experiences!
