The emotional ups and downs of being a surrogate — how do you cope with the feelings that come and go?

Being a surrogate is such a beautiful journey, but let’s be real—it can also be an emotional rollercoaster. Many of us experience intense feelings of joy, pride, and connection, but those highs often come with their own set of challenges. The anticipation of handing over a child to intended parents can leave us feeling vulnerable and sometimes even a bit lost.
One thing that helps many of us navigate these ups and downs is finding a supportive community. Sharing our experiences with others who truly understand can lighten the load. For instance, I found someone in a similar situation, and we started chatting regularly. Just having someone to share the joy and the fears with has made all the difference. We exchange thoughts on our emotional shifts, and it really normalizes what we're feeling.
Another approach some of us take is journaling. Writing down our thoughts can be a great release. It helps to organize our emotions, especially when we’re feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes, just getting those feelings out on paper can provide clarity and relief, making it easier to cope with whatever comes our way.
Setting boundaries is also key. As surrogates, we often feel pressure to be the “perfect” carrier, but it’s essential to remember that it’s okay to prioritize our own emotional health. If you’re feeling drained, it’s perfectly fine to take a step back from social interactions or even limit communication with the intended parents for a bit. Protecting our mental space can help us process everything more smoothly.
Lastly, embrace the small victories. Whether it’s a successful transfer or a personal milestone, celebrating those moments can help us stay grounded during tougher times. I’ve found that reaching out to others in our community during these moments can amplify the joy and create deeper connections.
Anyone else dealing with this emotional whirlwind? Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference—would love to hear your experiences!
