Navigating social events where everyone is drinking — how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
We’ve all been there—walking into a party where the drinks are flowing, and it feels like everyone is in a different world. It can be daunting, right? Many of us feel that pressure to fit in or worry about how others might perceive our choice to stay sober. But it’s totally possible to navigate these events and even enjoy ourselves. One thing that has really helped me is planning ahead. If I know I’ll be in a situation where drinking is the main event, I make sure to bring a drink that feels special to me, like sparkling water with a slice of lime or a non-alcoholic cocktail. Having something in hand not only gives me a sense of belonging but also helps to deflect questions about why I’m not drinking. Plus, it can be a great conversation starter! I’ve met others who appreciate a good mocktail and it’s led to some genuine connections. Another approach that works for many of us is finding a buddy before heading into these social situations. If you can connect with someone else who is also choosing not to drink, you’ll have that support system right there. Even if it’s just a quick text to check in, knowing you’re not alone can make a world of difference. I found a friend from this community who I texted before a recent gathering, and just having that connection made me feel more grounded when I arrived. We also need to embrace honesty about our experiences. If someone asks why we’re not drinking, it’s okay to share a bit about our journey. Many people are surprisingly understanding and even curious. By being open, we can break down some of those barriers and create a more inclusive atmosphere. I’ve had some of my most meaningful conversations with people who were intrigued by my choice and shared their own stories in return. Navigating these social events can be tough, but remember that it’s okay to prioritize your comfort. Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. What strategies have you found helpful in these situations?
