How do you navigate social events where everyone else is drinking and you feel out of place?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating social events where everyone seems to be drinking can feel like walking into a scene where you’re the only one without a costume. Many of us have been there — standing in a crowded room, feeling out of place while everyone else laughs a little louder and dances a little wilder. It can be tough, and the pressure to fit in can really weigh on us. One thing that has helped me is finding a go-to non-alcoholic drink that I enjoy. Whether it's sparkling water with a splash of juice or a caffeine-free herbal tea, having something in my hand makes a world of difference. It can help distract from the feeling of being an outsider and gives the illusion of participating without the pressure to drink. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter — I’ve found that people often ask about my drink, and this opens up a dialogue that can help me connect with others. Another approach some of us try is being upfront about our choice not to drink. I remember feeling nervous the first time I said, “I’m not drinking tonight,” but the truth is, people are often more understanding than we expect. Sharing why I choose not to drink can sometimes lead to deeper conversations and even help others who might feel the same way but are hesitant to speak up. It’s about creating those little connections that remind us we’re not alone in this. If you’re feeling really out of place, it might help to bring a friend who understands where you’re coming from. Having even one person in your corner who gets it can make the night feel less daunting. We can support each other through the awkward moments and help each other find the fun in a way that feels authentic to us. How do you navigate these social situations? Anyone else ever find themselves feeling like the odd one out at a party? Sometimes just knowing we’re all facing the same challenges can help ease the discomfort. Would love to hear your experiences!
