Navigating social events where everyone else is drinking — how do you handle the pressure?

Navigating social events where everyone else is drinking can feel like walking through a minefield, can’t it? Many of us have been there, feeling the pressure to fit in while trying to stick to our own choices about sobriety. It’s tough to balance wanting to enjoy the company of friends and the discomfort that comes with being the only one with a soda in hand.
One thing that really helped me was preparing in advance. Before the event, I’d think about what I’d say when someone inevitably asks why I’m not drinking. Having a few simple responses ready made it easier to deflect any uncomfortable questions or comments. Sometimes, I’d even share that I’m taking a break from alcohol for my health or just to reevaluate my relationship with drinking. It’s amazing how many people respect that and even share their own stories.
Another approach that’s been beneficial is finding a buddy who understands where I’m coming from. I reached out to a friend who also identifies as sober, and we started attending events together. This way, we supported each other through the awkward moments, and it felt less isolating to be in a room full of drinkers when I had someone by my side who got it. Sometimes even just having one person in your corner can change everything.
We might also think about bringing our own drinks to social gatherings. I’ve started making my favorite mocktails at home and bringing them along. Not only does it give me something special to sip on, but it also opens up a conversation with others who might be curious about my drink. It’s a small way to feel more included while staying true to myself.
So, how do you all handle the pressure at social events? Any tips or experiences to share? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands makes all the difference.
