The pressure to conform during holidays and family gatherings — how do you handle it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Holidays and family gatherings can feel like a minefield for many of us navigating sobriety in a drinking culture. The pressure to conform is real, and sometimes it feels like we're the odd ones out, especially when everyone else is toasting and laughing over cocktails. It can be overwhelming and isolating, and many of us have felt that anxiety creep in as the season approaches. One thing that has really helped me is having a plan in place before the gatherings. Think about what you want to say when someone offers you a drink or questions your sobriety. You might find it easier to have a go-to response ready, like, "I'm taking a break from alcohol right now" or "I’m good with a sparkling water, thanks!" It not only makes you feel more confident but can also help change the subject quickly, steering the conversation away from your choices. Another approach some of us try is bringing our own fun non-alcoholic drinks to share. It’s a great way to show that being sober doesn’t mean missing out on the festivities. I’ve found that when I bring something like a fancy mocktail or a creative non-alcoholic beer, it often sparks interest, and others get curious about it. Plus, it gives us a chance to connect with others who might be looking for alternatives but feel shy about it. Many of us also find support in connecting with others who understand this journey. For me, having even one person at the gathering who knows what I’m going through makes a world of difference. Whether it's a supportive family member or a friend, leaning on each other can help ease that pressure to conform. If you don’t have anyone in your immediate circle, consider reaching out to someone from our community beforehand. Just talking about our experiences can be a huge relief. Anyone else feeling the weight of these holiday gatherings? What do you do to navigate the pressure? Sometimes just sharing strategies can help us all feel a little less alone.
