Navigating cultural expectations from our families while trying to carve out our own identities can feel like walking a tightrope, especially within the Santhal community. Many of us have experienced the weight of tradition pressing down on us, often conflicting with our personal dreams and aspirations. It’s a tough balancing act where we might feel pulled in two different directions, and that can lead to so many feelings of frustration and confusion.
One thing that really helped me was creating a space to talk about these feelings with someone who understands our culture. I found a friend who also grapples with these expectations, and we’ve started sharing our experiences over chai. Just being able to voice our struggles has made the cultural pressure feel a bit lighter. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in feeling the push and pull of family expectations and our personal desires.
Another approach some of us have found useful is to set small boundaries with our families. This might mean gently expressing our needs or desires, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. For example, I began by sharing my passion for pursuing a career that’s a bit different from what my family envisioned for me. I still respect their values, but letting them know what truly makes me happy has been freeing. It’s not always easy, and there are tough conversations, but many of us find that starting small can lead to more understanding over time.
Finding ways to celebrate our heritage while also embracing our individuality can also help bridge this gap. We might choose to participate in traditional events that resonate with us while also bringing in our own unique flair. This can be a way to honor our roots without feeling completely defined by them. It’s a journey, and many of us are still figuring it out, but those small steps can lead to more authentic connections with both our families and ourselves.
Anyone else navigating this tricky blend of tradition and self-discovery? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything — I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s helped you find your balance.
